Project Inclusive - Mr. Tunde Ewaremen

Date: 2020-12-15, Location: Lagos State

"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." Winston Churchill

Driving the mobility cart around the compound with glorified smiles and frills of appreciation to God and Bruderhilfe social Development Initiative team, Mr Tunde Ewaremen could not hold back his joy and sense of gratitude. This is a monumental positive change in his life. An opportunity to become what he had dreamt of becoming right from childhood. Now there is no holding back, no stopping him.

Standing upright with the aid of his crutches in his now refurbished apartment by the organisation, Tunde wonders, reminiscences and compares what his life was like months ago and what God has used Bruderhilfe team to turn it into. The house located in Bariga, a suburb in Lagos lacks all the befitting fittings for a comfortable house, especially for a person living with disability like Tunde.

This PLWD is a dogged one, a rarity in the society where many see themselves as liabilities rather than assets. He is a graduate of University of Lagos, but due to his condition, he has found it difficult to have something meaningful to do with his life apart from few handcrafts he could lay his hands on due to the socially-exclusive and discriminating nature of the social-economic environment of the country.

On hearing of the state of this PLWD in late 2020, the team swung into action. Starting with the complete renovation of the apartment, to registering him in Graphics design college in his locality and donations of the clothing materials and that of a mobility carts to aid his movement across town. It was a complete turnaround that Tunde and many around him could not have envisaged a month ago.

Now, Tunde is a n example of what can happen if government agencies, private organisations and non-state actors pull their resources together and helped PLWDs to be a contributor to the development of the society. Tunde has vowed to contribute his quota to the social development initiatives of Bruderhilfe Social Development Initiative and to the society at large. there are many more like him that desire to make such vows.

Once many organisations like BruderHilfe Social Development organisation can empower these ones, life will become more meaningful for them and they will see themselves as asset and not liability. For Tunde, this is a new chapter that will lead to more promising future.
